Detecting Impending Symptom Transitions Using Early-Warning Signals in Individuals Receiving Treatment for Depression

نویسندگان

چکیده

Drawing on dynamical systems theory, we investigated whether within-persons-detected early-warning signals in momentary affect preceded critical transitions toward lower levels of depressive symptoms during therapy. Participants were 41 depressed individuals who starting psychological treatment. Positive and negative (high low arousal) measured 5 times a day using ecological assessments over 4 months ( M = 522 observations per individual). Depressive assessed weekly 6 months. Within-persons rising autocorrelation was found for 89% with at least one variable (vs. 62.5% without transitions) consistently higher proportion the separate variables (~44% across measures) than (~27%). Rising variance few individuals, both preceding (~11%) (~12%). Part our sample showed slowing down, but may have limited value as personalized prediction method.

Early warning signals for critical transitions in a thermoacoustic system

Dynamical systems can undergo critical transitions where the system suddenly shifts from one stable state to another at a critical threshold called the tipping point. The decrease in recovery rate to equilibrium (critical slowing down) as the system approaches the tipping point can be used to identify the proximity to a critical transition. Several measures have been adopted to provide early in...

self-organized vegetation patterns: early warning signals for predicting ecosystem transitions

the significance of spatial heterogeneity in understanding ecological processes has been recognized long ago. one of the earliest expressions of this recognition is the habitat heterogeneity hypothesis that links spatial  heterogeneity to niche vegetation patterns formation and species coexistence. yet, an  important if not crucial  aspect of landscape heterogeneity has escaped deep considerati...

Early Warning Signals for Critical Transitions: A Generalized Modeling Approach

Critical transitions are sudden, often irreversible, changes that can occur in a large variety of complex systems; signals that warn of critical transitions are therefore highly desirable. We propose a new method for early warning signals that integrates multiple sources of information and data about the system through the framework of a generalized model. We demonstrate our proposed approach t...

Early Warning Signals of Ecological Transitions: Methods for Spatial Patterns

A number of ecosystems can exhibit abrupt shifts between alternative stable states. Because of their important ecological and economic consequences, recent research has focused on devising early warning signals for anticipating such abrupt ecological transitions. In particular, theoretical studies show that changes in spatial characteristics of the system could provide early warnings of approac...

No early warning signals for stochastic transitions: insights from large deviation theory.

In the study of Boettiger & Hastings [1], we demonstrated that conditioning on observing a purely stochastic transition from one stable basin to another could generate time-series trajectories that could be mistaken for an early warning signal of a critical transition (such as might be due to a fold bifurcation [2]), when instead the shift is merely due to chance. While the goal was to highligh...
